COMBATING ALTERATIONS OF THE MASTICATORY SYSTEMOcclusion and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
How do alterations of the masticatory system affect us?
· The most common problems are: earache, sore throat, headache, backache or jaw pain; reduced ability to open and close the mouth; noises from the joint area...
How can it be corrected?
· Re-establishing the correct balance between muscles, joints and teeth using orthopaedic, orthodontic or prosthetic techniques, or using splints or gnathological positioners.
What are splints and gnathological positioners?
· These are acrylic moulds that are placed between the teeth to redirect and reduce the force applied by chewing and to relax the muscles. These are generally used at night.
